Flotsam & Jetsam X10
Mesh n' I saw Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World this weekend. It was a wonderful film. It exceeded my expectations, which I'll admit were quite low given the previews, raised a bit when I read a few postive reviews, and went even higher when I realized Peter Weir was directing the film. I love films that respect he audience, that dont' feel the need to wank off and over-hype a scene with soaring music and Braveheart-esque attempts at inspiring speaches (though they have their place, like in Braveheart). This film does none of those things, yet manages to keep you anxious, focused, connecting with the characters and part of the stories. The sheer attention to detail is enough to overwhelm you, but Weir's stalwart insistence on making the story about the Captain, his close surgeon friend, and the lives of the men on the ship but undermined any sense of nascent overwhelming, yet made it all still feel somehow subjectively epic. If that makes any sense at all. Seriously though, go see this film. I haven't even talked about it's downright, well, edifying qualities.
Yesterday April & I watched The Matrix: Reloaded again. On a second viewing, the film doesn't seem so bad. You've simply gotta fast foward it through a couple irrelavent, borring fight scenes to get to the actual story. And even though the film as a whole lacked the overwhelming "damn that's so cool!" factor of the first film, the scene where Morpheus fights on top of the tractor-trailer, and when he earlier slices down the side of the Merovingian henchmans Suburban 'causing it to flip onto it's side as he whips out his uzi to blast the gas tank, well, that's just some of the slickest, smoothest, sexiest film-making ever.
This Saturday is the Michigan / Ohio State game. There will be a party. Location has yet to be determined. My prediction is Michigan 17, OSU 6. OSU's only shot at winning is keeping Michigan under 10 points, and with as many weapons as Michigan has I just don't think it's possible. The fact I think they'll hold them to 17 is impressive enough in its own right in my mind (Given Michigan scores no less than 28 points a game). I mean, Michigan, aside from Chris Perry (clearly the best running back in the Big-10, arguably in all of college football), has 5 receivers averaging 13 yards or more a pass, and Steve Breaston has scored a touchdown in four ways: passing, receiving, punt return, and rushing. I haven't even started talking about Edwards & Avant.
Whelp. With OSU potentially moving up to #2 in the BCS today, this game is only getting bigger & bigger. I've just gotta pray for an LSU or USC loss and my Wolverines could be in a NC game.

My husband saw that film last night and absolutely loved it. I haven't seen it yet, but his basic summation was: "Dumb people will think the movie is about the chase, and will thus be bored. Smart people will see that the movie is about the characters and their relationship with each other set in the context of a chase."
