Martha Bayles is among the country's most talented and versatile arts critics, best known as a vigorous advocate for the vitality and potential of American popular culture. She is the author of Hole in Our Soul: The Loss of Beauty and Meaning in American Popular Music, and Ain't That a Shame? Censorship and the Culture of Transgression. She is also a regular contributor to such publications as The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Washington Post, Harpers, Wall Street Journal, Times Literary Supplement, Chronicle of Higher Education, Wilson Quarterly, and Antioch Review. She formerly taught at Claremont McKenna College and is now teaching in the Honors Program at Boston College.

This lecture is sponsored by the SunTrust Chair of Excellence in Humanities, and is free and open to the public.
