Let's Just Get This Outta Da Way

My dear, sweet boys in the Maize n' Blue are back in the top 5 in the BCS.

Believe it or not, Michigan still has a long shot at making it into the Sugar Bowl (this years national championship game).

This happens IF

1. Michigan (#5) beats Ohio State (#4) in the final game of the season.
2. USC (#2) looses one of its games against UCLA, Arizona, and/or Oregon State.
3. LSU (#3) looses one of its games against Alabama, Ole Miss, and/or Arkansas.

My bet is on Michigan beating Ohio State, for a number of reasons, the biggest one being that OU's offense can't get more than a couple touchdowns a game against teams with crappy D, and Michigan's defense has been playing incredible for 5 straight games. I don't care how good the Buckeye's defense is, Michigan just has far too many weapons (albeit inconsistent ones), to hold the Maize n' Blue to under 10 points, which the Buckeyes will have to do to even have a shot. As you might recall, Michigan is averaging upwards of 30 points a game.

Odds are strongly against USC dropping a game against any of their final three opponents. It just isnt likely. It's a product of them being in a weenie-Pac-10 conference, which is an argument against USC being ranked as high as they are, but there's not alot we can do about that. Still, I can't believe I'd say this, but my hope is on the Beavers. They beat Cal, who beat USC earlier this season. Let's pray for an upset.

And then, it's a shot that Michigan will rise to #3 if they beat Ohio State regardless of whether or not LSU wins their final 3 games, but it's a certainty if LSU can loose against Alabama, Ole Miss, and Arkansas. Ole Miss, fueled by the genetically blessed Eli Manning, has the best shot of dropping LSU. If this happens, Michigan is for sure #3.

The Long Shot: Oklahoma dropping 2 of their final 3 games, and 1 & 3 occuring. This isn't likely, like, as unlikely as monkey's flying out of my backside. They play two more games, against Baylor & Texas Tech. Once again, it's a testimony to the weakness of their schedule, and the schedules of teams in the SEC & Big 10 that say, Michigan plays their final game against a top 5 team, & LSU plays 1 more ranked team and 2 rivalries, and Oklahoma plays teams who ought to drop a division.

Well actually...

Michigan is not yet in the top 5 in the BCS. They are in the top 5 in the AP and the Coaches polls but might not crack the top 5 in the all important BCS rankings. ESPN.com has them projected at number 8 in the BCS with a good possibility of moving up if they win out.

They will finish in the top five, but I don't see any way for them to make it into the championship, even if USC and LSU were to lose and Michigan wins out. Their strength of schedule isn't high enough.

Strangely enough it might actually be Texas playing OU in the Sugar Bowl. Of course, they'd have to win out first. . .

Or, if you are an LSU fan, you just hope for USC or Oklahoma to lose and...LSU to win out.
