Atlanta & Back
I suppose I should give some kindof account for the weekend past. Well, April & I drove down to Atlanta with Joel Swanson and Bekah Sotello to crash with Ruth & Jeremy Cox, along with Joy & Erik Swanson, Currie & Abbie Bishop, & Jon Ottinger. We got there 'round 7:30 on Friday night.
For the bazillions times I driven through or into Atlanta during my time at & after Covenant, I nevef really spent anytime in the city. Ruth & Jeremy live right in midtown, about a block from anything, and most importantly the greatest bookstore in Atlanta, Outwrite. April & I made a point of dragging our more homophobic friends inside after we had had some exceptional rich icecream from Jakes across the street.
I decided rather quickly that the most disconcerting element to living in a predominantly homosexual neighborhood, like midtown, would be the fact that they are profoundly better dressers than I am. Talk about unbelievable senses of style. It's as if the desire to kiss another man suddenly gives you a remarkable fashion sense. Forget my sexual or moral sensibilities, I'd just feel like that one kind in the 8th grade who didn't own a pair of airwalks or vans.

And we're not even talking about being on the culture/art/music cutting edge. In chattanooga being in the "art crowd" simply takes a faded leather jacket, a gillian welch album, a forever bluegrass sticker, and knowledge of where CHADS Record Store is located. In Atlanta it's a whole 'nother arts ecosystem. Hell, while reading the Gay & Lesbian Film Festival brochure I saw a girl walk by in a velvet suite. I didn't even know they MADE velvet suites. Nonetheless ones for the mid-riff baring, chai drinking hipster masses.
So Saturday the guys & girls splitup. Girls went to get coffee. Guys went to Georgia Tech to play ultimate frisbee. Yes, me, playing ultimate frisbee. It was fun, but I ran more than I have in like, 2 years. I don't wanna do that again.
Then we played cards.
I spent alot of the weekend doing my annual Lord of the Rings reading. I'm halfway through The Two Towers. What a fine book.
I was also able to mooch wireless access of someone in Ruth & Jeremy's building, dunno who. Which was nice.
April & I crashed on Tim & Ari's futon, who live upstairs from Ruth & Jeremy and who are Andy's brother & sister in law.
Sunday we went to Christ Church PCA. I've decided that I will fight, tooth n' nail, in my church or any church I'm ever at, against having just singers in a praise band, especially the female ones. I mean, they're un-necessary. If you've got a competant band, one or two singers who also play instruments can handle moving a song along, especially if you've got a second guitarist to play along with the vocals. It just really annoys me/weirds me out to see those 2 or 3 girls who stand up there, not playing any instruments, acting all smarmy and unironic about it all, smiling and bouncing their head up on the start of each phrase. They also usually wear alot of makeup. I know I know I'm being cynical, but their "role" is uneccesary, and we shouldn't encourage/indulge that kinda wanking of on the part of our brothers & sisters in Christ. If you wanna be "on stage" under the auspices of "leading worship", start a CCM band.
Anyways, other than that minor annoying, worship was good. The sermon was solid, the music was fantastic, and the folks were friendly. There seemed to be a big push towards community there, which made me happy. They also had this artsy element to them, including a gallery in the foyer of the church.
It was a good weekend. I need to spend more time with unironic folks.

I can be unironic.
No, really.
Stop laughing.

Hey, good seeing you in ATL. Next time we'll have to catch Ludicrus in concert.
FYI - the leader of that praise band, Bill Long, is from Chattanooga.
