Morbid & Macabre & Suicide Songs

I watched ER last night with Mesh & April. It's been a long time since I've watched an entire episode and it left me feeling kinda panicked. Probably makes me shallow, but whatever.

My mother is one of the most morbid people I know. I can't count the number of times she would tell us about some dream she had where all the children died. In her dream-world I've been hit by a train 264 times, run over by a car 309, a van 201, kidnapped & murdered 783, car wreck (while driving) 149, and on and on. Seriously, I'd wake up in the morning and hear another crazy story from her about some wild dream where I fell off the Empire State Building. She's also picked out who my father should marry should she die anytime soon. He just loves that, let me tell you.

But this all makes sense if you know a bit of my Mom's history. If you'd been kidnapped by your makes-Royal-Tenemabaum-seem-a-saint father and carried off to Nigeria to join the peace corps and told your mother was dead, which you thought was the case for 20 years, you'd probably some psychosis to work through, or not in my mom's case. Either way, I dont' blame her for it. All I know is I've got my own little morbid death-fascination streak and a grandfather I've never talked to who has 7 Ph.D's and enough children to start his own baseball team; a football team if you count the bastards.

So ER leaves me wigging out. I'm definately gonna get a DNR if I ever get the time & money to draw up the papers with a lawyer. Until then, here it is for the whole world to read. So if there's any issue (and there shouldn't be with April), you all know to pull the plug on my carcass if it looks like I'm gonna spend anything more than a couple months getting my nutrients through a tube in my throat. I do not want to live out my life a prison in my own body, unable to communicate with the world. Mebbe technology will have reached the point, a la Matrix where they can digitally tap me into something cool. Ya, then I'll give you some feedback 'bout what to do. If that aint the case, pull the plug. This life is valuable, but there's something better beyond that I'm looking forward to. I've got alot of questions and apologies to make. I'm not afraid of death.

Do something creative though. Like, stuff my clothes full of candy and toss me off a really high building. Folks at the bottom will be like "OH MY GOSH DID THAT MAN JUST....hey a snickers!" That would amuse me in eternity, I promise.

So, in conclusion, here are my top 5 songs to die/kill yourself to:

1. Elliot Smith, "Needle in the Hay"
2. Radiohead: "Fake Plastic Trees"
3. Radiohead: "Exit Music"
4. Red House Painters: "Have You Forgotten?"
5. Beck: "Loser" (for those of you out there who wanna do it with moxy)

"needle in the hay" is a pretty rough one...in fact, that whole album is...i got it in '99, and thought to myself, "this is great, but now i'm depressed."

his other work has a similar tone - a tone which probably led to his passing...

Ever heard "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails?

Posted by: Ben at October 31, 2003 02:26 PM

Man, I cannot believe that about your mom, Josiah. You're saying she believed for twenty years that your mom was dead, then after twenty years, discovered she was not dead? Your grandmother must've been traumatized by the whole thing.

Posted by: scott cunningham at October 31, 2003 02:29 PM

My grandmother thought they were dead also, more or less. Had no idea where they were or anything. She lost all her hair. Eventually remarried "Grandpa Bob", and before she died was smoking a couple packs a day. She was an incredibly sweet lady, and passed away before Grandpa Bob. Even though biologically he may not have been, he was our grandpa.

Oddly the two great male "Grandparents" in my life I wasn't even related to biologically. My great grandpa Quintus, whom I'm named after, married my great grandmother Quintus who had a child from a previous marriage (that child being my grandpa who kidnapped my mom and her two sisters).

Grandpa Q eventually came to live with us in Carbondale. He was also the antique restorer I mentioned earlier, do whom I owe whatever nascent aesthetic I might have.

Mind you, this is only on my mother's side of the family, and it's only about 25%. The entire story reads like a Faulkner novel, except, worse. The stories and "real-life" pictures of grace are something else. One day I'll write it all in a book, after certain members have passed on and certain things can be revealed.

Anyways...

Try evanescence "My immortal" and refer to yourself as who she is talking about. There is actually a feeling of deathness on your part and let your consiousness slip away with eradication.

Does anyone know any good songs about suicide that are upbeat? (or any upbeat songs that make you want to kill yourself--i.e. sickishly life-affirming)

Posted by: littlebgirl at April 15, 2004 05:11 AM

hey, maybe you guys should check out type o negative, whole cd's "world coming down" and "bloody kisses" i think those are the most depressing, but you can find any good suicide song on any of their cd's. my fiance and i also found "our song" it's a shame we can't play it at our wedding, but it's "everything dies" off of "world coming down.

Posted by: unknown at May 11, 2004 08:55 PM

Um, why are we saying that suicide is ok? I just don't get it. You don't give up and romanticise it! There are so many better songs out there about how to move BEYOND the pain, even though the pain may be unbearable."Josiah" is a rediculous ass because he trivializes your pain and makes it into some sort of q+a. You guys better get a clue and stop bringing disgrace to all the truly tortured souls out there who are way too despressed and tormented to bother talking about it with losers.

Posted by: katy at May 15, 2004 03:14 AM

The song that you guys are talking about... the one where he "talks" through it... is it the one where at the end, he screams "Hello, my first name is distance and I really don't care if I never wake up again?" Just wondering... I have that one on my comp and don't have the name for it.

I really think that you guys should look at the real side of suicide.
My friend completed suicide on 13th February 2004. He was 31 years old and hung himself in his own front room because he had been suffering with depression.
Suicide is not something to joke about, it's not glamourous, it's not funny - and there is no turning back.
Talking about songs to 'slit-your-wrists-to' is stupid and ignorant.
I doubt you guys know the first thing about suicide and the destruction it leaves in it's wake. You don't know the pain of loosing someone you love in such a tragic way.
Imagine finding out that your son or daughter had died that way and then joke about what music you should listen to.

Wait and Bleed- Slipknot
My Own Prision-Creed(i know sounds craaazy lol kinda gave me that "feeling")

The Pass-Rush(another wieird one but it also gave me that feeling of hopelessness, at the end of the song i could actually see myself shooting myself)(http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/The-Pass-lyrics-Rush/F6DA12047F3403D848256BBF0034DEDD)

Posted by: Tear M at May 25, 2004 11:25 PM

Hey Claire, my friend commit suicide on April 13, 2004. So yes I have seen the pain, but i've seen the understanding and the acceptance. Even though I was sad, I felt more happy that he no longer had to endure pain. I still contenplate suicide about every other day. So really- you are the one who doesn't understand what the rest of us feel.

Posted by: JC at May 26, 2004 01:08 AM

I'm not trying to judge you or ofend you with what I'm saying and Tear M - I have every right to be here.

JC - if you have lost a friend you will surely understand that I feel so frightened by the subject of suicide that I would do anything to stop just one person completing it. I just think it is wrong to trivialise it as some - I hasten to add not all - people on this site have been doing.

Please don't take offence by what I put and I hope you have happier times ahead.

Tear,

I'm sorry I snapped at you! Guess I'm a little defensive these days!

I found this site by accident after looking for some help pages about suicide. Since loosing my friend I've needed a bit of help understanding the whole situation that he was in and was looking for some answers I guess.

I'm not so much against suicide, I just think there are other options and people that are desperate to help. I'd do anything to stop one person from feeling the way we all did after loosing our friend. There is always another route to try without resorting to the most permanent solution. If anyone on here is depressed, please try and work through it. There will be bad days ahead, but there will be many good days too.

Love,

Claire

Posted by: Claire at June 9, 2004 10:47 AM

I'd probably have to say:
1) Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow?
2) In the Hall of the Mountain King
3) Soundgarden - Pretty Noose
4) Primus - Bob
5) Nivrana - Lithium
6) Henry Mancini - Baby Elephant Walk
7) Metallica - Ride the Lightning
8) Iced Earth - Consequences
9) Pink Floyd - In The Flesh?
10) Darude - Sandstorm

Those would definitely be somewhere in the mix. I don't know, when that point comes I'll be sure to have it listed in my obituary.

Posted by: steve at June 13, 2004 10:36 PM

I agree with Claire. I think you are all full of it, If you were as depressed as you seem so proud to be, you wouldn't be here to encouragement people to kill themselves. You cant make out depression someting that makes you unique or stand out, it is a sickness. You might as well go give some kid some opium?? It's the same friggin thing, morons.

Sometimes songs about suicide are all that gets me thru the day. Something about "misery loves company" or something like that. Anyway, it helps to know there are others like you that understand, and all you that think we're crazy or something have never been there. It's not about ending your life as much as it is about improving your situation. Thanks for all the suggestions, It's pretty rough right now.

Posted by: Gene at June 22, 2004 07:40 PM

Gene's right.u hear a song and u think it makes u feel like suiciding? no, it's not the song itself, the problem is in u. BOHEMIAN RHASODY by Queen, COMFORTABLY NUMB by Pink Floyd may be thought of as suicide songs but when i hear'em i feel comforted.

an intresting topic, but definitely morbid in nature. lol

Before You Kill Yourself
by Marigrace Iodice

Your mind’s made up
You can’t take it anymore,
Life’s impossible
And suicide’s the answer to Heaven’s Door!
Before you kill yourself
Ask the 15-year-old,
Who tried to electrocute himself.
He lived, but now…
He must carry on
With both of his arms gone!

What about jumping?
Come see Jack, who survived his leap
From a 10 story building.
He lived, but now…
He’ll always need care,
He’s a vegetable—a mind like a cabbage,
He lives in a fog,
With irreversible brain damage.
But worst of all…
He knows he use to be normal!

Come see the All American Football player
Who thought he was cool and bought a gun
And shot himself in the head at 21.
He thought it would be easy
And without any harm,
He lived, but now…
He can’t feel his legs and has a useless arm!
He lost his dream, his vision and his hearing on one side
But he lived
Through his attempt at suicide!

Then there was this Prom Queen
Who was left comatose
With extensive brain damage
From her drug overdose.
She mixed some alcohol with some pills
It took awhile…but it definitely kills.
First, you’re in excruciating pain
Your eyes roll back & your skin turns yellow
It’s not a pretty sight and it’s a hell of a way to go!

Who will cut the rope from where you hang down?
Who will identify your body after you’ve drowned?
Who will scrape your brains from the ceiling?
Or clean the blood off the carpet?
A cleaning crew will refuse the job
But somebody’s got to do it!

Oh…and that carefully worded suicide note is no help
For the unending pain that is forever felt!
Who will it be? Your Sister? Your Mother?
Your Father? Your Brother?
Those who love you will never recover!

They’ll have to live with regret and with all the guilt
Along with all those unanswered questions.
They love you…but down deep inside they hate you
For thinking only about yourself and your life ending decision!

There are people who can help you
Before you decide to put your life to an end,
Call a hotline…or call a doctor
Call the hospital…or call a friend.
Call a minister…or call a priest
Call a family member…or call the police!!
They will help you
And they’ll give you hope
When your will is down
And you can no longer cope!

You say you don’t want to be stopped
Are you definitely sure
You want to commit suicide?
Because if you fail
You’re gonna wish that you were left to die!
So…Before You Kill Yourself…
Remember...
Suicide is not always the answer,
Nor is it always successful
Consider your actions
Because living with the results are dreadful!

Let me explain myself a little clearer...

My friend died in february after hanging himself. He had severe depression that he masked very well. No one knew he was ill. We were all left with this feeling that if we had had the chance to talk to him about how he was feeling, we might still have him with us.

Loosing my friend and talking to others who have lost children, partners, siblings to suicide, the pain these people are feeling is so overwhelming. I would move heaven and earth to stop one person suiciding, it leaves such devestation and pain behind it.

I could never fully understand how someone with depression feels, this is why I have visited different web sites etc. trying to understand. I've been lucky and life is good for me, but I want to help and I want to understand.

I don't think any of you are mad or stupid, when I first visited the site I thought it was morbib and a bit sick - forgive me for that because alot of you need somewhere like this to vent.

I hope things improve for everyone and please don't give up living. It is the most precious thing in the world....

Hey Claire...get a fucking life, you're not suicidal, but you're obviously really fucking pathetic; you want pity because your fucking friend commited suicide------PLEASE DON'T HAVE CHILDREN!!!------
i know A LOT of bitches like you. After i landed myself in ICU...a lot of people like you started coming out of the woodwork...i've had two friends find success in suicide, stop trying to save the world...you're friend is dead, no thanks to you ...you weren't there then to talk him him out of it so now you're trying to make up for it by telling others not to...HE'S DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...Good friend...

I'm not looking for sympathy but I would like to say that I'm a survivor of suicide. I attempted but lived through it and I believe it's because i'm meant to take a second shot at life. Please think before you act that you are affecting the lives of many others with your actions. Whenever I get another suicidal urge It's my mother who keeps me going. Please get help....there's always a way out! Remeber that suicide is a PERMANANT solution to a TEMPORARY problem!

Jesus - I have a child. I know the value of life and I know that I should have been there for my friend - don't you think that is the whole point of my posting here?!

I think the way you are so rude to those who are only trying to help shows your immaturity. Yes, my friend is dead, but as I have said before, I would do anything to prevent it happening to someone else. Perhaps it is the guilt - but my intentions are good. I certainly do not want pity.

Perhaps you should take some help, start living life for what it is. Stop wasting time hating people and being abusive and actually help yourself.

I saw her lying in a pool of red
I think it's the greatest thing I'll ever see
Your dead mommy lying in front of me
I'll always remember her lying dead on the floor
I hope she dies twenty times more."

"You say nothing yet I still hear
I am the thing that you most fear
I cause the pain deep in your heart
O, how I love to tear your world apart
Well I feel your pain and I survive
And I survive
I see your anger, I can hardly wait
How it feels so good to cause you such hate
Tried to ignore me. Thought I'd go away
But I'm back for good. I'm here to stay."

Anyone who kills themselves because a "song said to" well, they're probably better off dead. And it very well be a permanent solution to a temporary problem, but aren't all problems temporary when you get right down to it?

Claire, I understand that you personally are devastated by what happened to your friend and I sympathize. But please try to look at it from your friend's point of view. I have no idea of the exact circumstances here, but think. It may have very well been that he considered exactly how it would make you feel, AND he might have regretted causing you pain, AND it might have made him pause in action. But in the end he DECIDED that it was the solution for him. No matter how you may feel about it, suicide is a very personal decision and only the person who makes it can properly evaluate all the variables.

Amerian culture isn't the only one out there. In many cultures suicide is condoned and even encouraged in certain situations. It's way to much hubris for me to conclude that "we simply know better" Most of those cultures are far, far older than ours.

If you are looking for a good song about suicide, try shoes by king's x:

there can be but better ways from yesterdays to me
somewhere there are better days for better ways to be
sunny days have funny ways of quieting the roar
is it still a blessed thing to live and live some more

Posted by: Dennis at July 22, 2004 07:29 PM

Hi Dennis

What you said makes sense. It's still a little raw for everyone concerned and seeing the devestation his death has caused to his family and friends has left everyone reeling. This is why, in an ideal world, I would do anything to stop anyone doing it.

I understand though that although I knew and cared for my friend, there were parts of him that no body knew. He was unhappy, I hope he's finally found some peace.

Claire, Suicide is a very hard thing to think about, sometimes its better for people to just think their way through it instead of acting on it. but i have to admit its very hard when someone is pestering you about it. let people think their own personal thoughts. because of your experience you probably know people will not accept help unless their ready, the best you can do is offer it, and hope they take it. you cannot force someone to want help.

My favorites are "Suicide is Painless," get the version from the MASH movie, it's pretty upbeat and "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas.

Good times.

I hate the new versions of Gloomy Sunday where they added that "I was dreaming omg it's okay now you're alive!!1!111omg!!11" part. That ticked me off. Ruins the point of killing yourself to it.

She went upstairs to make her bed
and not one word to her mother said
Her mother she went upstairs too
Saying, "Daughter, oh daughter, what troubles you?"

"Oh mother, oh mother, I cannot tell
That butcher's boy I love so well
He courted me my life away
And now at home he will not stay"

"There is a place in London town
Where that butcher's boy goes and sits down
He takes that young girl on his knee
And tells to her what he won't tell me"

Her father he came home from work
Saying, "Where is my daughter, she looks so hurt"
He went upstairs to give her hope
And found her hanging by a rope

He took a knife and cut her down
And in her bosom these words were found
" dig my grave both wide and deep
Place a marble stone at my head and feet
And on my grave place a white snow dove
And tell the world that I died of love

When I was in high school (2001-2004), they used to play "Mad World" the song at the end of Donnie Darko every Monday morning before first period. I'm pretty sure someone was attempting to up the teen suicide rate.

More to commit suicide to:

Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata"
Beck's "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime"
Jars of Clay - "Sad Clown"
Stereophonics' "Mr. Writer"
Cat Steven's "Trouble"
Cake's "Friend is a Four-Letter Word"
Weezer's "Butterfly"
David Bromberg's "Mr. Bojangles (live)"
Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" (as previously mentioned)
Maria Callas' rendition of "Habanera" (from the opera Carmen)
Marilyn Manson's "The Nobodies"
Marilyn Manson's "In the Shadow of the Valley of Death"
Track 13 off the 'Magnolia' soundtrack

Enjoy what you will and try not to void me if I listed something you didn't like. Ciao, and a peaceful death to you all, my friends.

My good friend Matt Flory shot himself in the head with his father's gun on June 11th 2004 somewhere around 7:00pm. It was just a few months ago. I was the last person to see him before he died. In fact, I was with him the day before he shot himself, setting up for a gathering at the house of another one of our friends. That friend of ours and I left for maybe 15 minutes to get something. When we came back Matt had left unannounced. The next day we found out he was dead. I was remarkably unaffected. Matt had been a relentless junkie and mental defective. Repeatedly kicked out of his house or running away or in jail or in court or anything else he could think of. He intentionally neglected to seek medical help for many different problems. He had a hernia for something like a year and never took care of it, leving the massive bulge in his abdomen alone to treat itself...

I guess I was content with the fact that Matt had ended his life. I found it honorable in a way. He recognized the fact that he couldn't function in the world. He hated the world. He hated himself for what he had allowed himself to become. When I saw him last he was in the process of improving his life. He had a liscence (finally) and a girlfriend and he hadn't been using drugs. He was back in his parents' house (which was better than the streets) and he even showered on a daily basis. When he shot himself he was doing well, and maybe it was a good time for him to pass. To die while he was happy... genuinely happy. He died quickly, peacefully, and happily... I can't think of a better way to pass on.

So, I suppose the idea I'm trying to communicate with this story is simply that death, sucide, and what society deems horrible, aren't necessarily always as bad as their made out to be. Think about life in a universal sense. Death is a natural part of life and nothing to frown upon. Nothing to fear or regret.

Good songs to kill yourself to:

Broken by Seether and Amy Lee
All Evanescence songs but especially My Last Breath, Tourniquet and Hello
Breaking the Habit by Linkin Park
Finding Myself by Smile Empty Soul
Everytime by Britney Spears
Walk Away by Christina Aguilera
Down by Blink 182
I Hate Everything About You by Three Days Grace

Well that's about it. Yeah I know Britney and Christina kinda don't fit in well with the rest but oh well they made me want to kill my self cuz the person I liked didn't like me.

"The Parting Glass" is an awesome song. I love the Shaun Davey version too. Watch "Waking Ned Devine" if you haven't seen the movie already. It's a beautiful movie.

Posted by: Luke at September 28, 2004 10:45 PM

a lot of people seem to think that the song comes first and then the feelings, but no, not true. For the song to have any effect, the feelings already have to be there. For instance, some rap song about shooting your mama might inspire an already angry person who already has illwill towards their mother to go off and pop her, but it won't have any effect on me. However, these songs:

ComaWhite, ComaBlack, Spade, Dissasociative, and a few others of Marilyn Manson's
Comfortably Numb (especially the one with pfloyd, NIN, and Bowie together)
Lithium, Come as you Are, and Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana...
They all bring out "those feelings". I don't think the song is going to make you commit suicide, but certain songs bring out certain feelings that may lead to it. It has been my experience though that the best songs are those that arouse emotions.

I think Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb is an excellent song to die to, I have a lot dreams in which I kill myself and die, and while that song was playing it was a spectacular experience as I left my body lying on the floor with my wrists slit and I looked into the dark gllomy horizon saying a last goodbye to what I use to know as reality, even the lyrcs go with the experience as you leave your body and enter another realm.
