Mobility
So I'm buying Andy's old Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop. He hooked me up with a sweet deal. I just couldn't afford dropping the 1,000 - 1,300 bucks to get a really choice notebook like Phrag's e-Machine or this.
Andy was really cool about it and suggested weekly payments, which I was more than up for. It's a 1 ghz p3 with 256 megs of ram & a 20 gig hard-drive. First thing I'm doing is picking up an 802.11x wireless card that supports a/b/g. It's also got a fully transferable warranty that's good until March, 2005. I've gotta say, warranty's with Dell pretty much provide the winning edge for them when it comes to any computer purchase. Their support, in my experience, is nothing short of immaculate.
My Dad and I have a statement: "pull a Dell" which means a random part of your computer breaks. You call Dell. A guy shows up same day or next day either with a better replacement part (like a 80 gig as opposed to a 20 gig in one situation), or with a brand new computer like in one of my Dad's laptop situations. Recently I had my 17" monitor start flickering occasionally. Nothing bad. I called Dell though, they brought be a brand new 19" the next day.
So all that to say, I have a sneaking suspicion this laptop purchased also gaurantees at least a year and a half of free upgrades, as long as something DOES break of course. Mebbe I'll have Percy chew on it.
Finally, just 'cause I didn't have the cashola to buy a bitchin' mobile axe, doesn't mean that other folks don't have the adequate resources. I talked Jeff into buying a vprMatrix notebook. I don't know if I can praise this thing enough. The design of it was by F-A Porsche (ya, the car makers), and it has a 15.2" widescreen monitor which allows you to watch DVD's in 15:10 aspect ratio, the way movies are meant to be watched.
Jeff left it here at my house/office so I could finishing installing all the software he needs while he & Faith cruise to a Gillian Welch concert in NC. So, I'm on it now, blogging. It's got wireless 802.11x (a/b/g) build right in, so I'm about to cruise to do morning coffee with Holton at Greyfriars, where they've got free wireless setup (courtesy of these guys).
Then it's off to see Intolerable Cruelty with April, then dinner & All The Real Girls, then off to Ben Horners b-day party, and finally hanging with Nudge & Capria & most likely drinking lots of gin & tonics while playing settlers.

I saw Intolerable Cruelty. It was aptly named. And a very Coen movie. I didn't like it, but there was one scene with the gun and the inhaler that made me laugh my tail offl. For real, I literally laughed till I cried. But I do not think it was worth $7.50 for me.

I worked off the vpr matrix for a couple months here at work. the screen is perhaps the best thing about that machine. other than that it had nothing but problems (couldn't handle a network connection consistently, without dropping it every other hour and then acting like there was no network driver... causing about 8 reboots per day.) It had built in wireless that has never worked. of the 3 vpr's here at work, i think only 1 of them has the built in wireless to be recognized (as a system devide...). i think you got a better deal with the dell (i got an 8200 thats pretty much a desktop replacement).
