The Man in Black

Johnny Cash died this morning of complications with diabetes. He was 71.

Not entirely sure what to say. He was, in my opinion, the best Christian, American singer-songwriter ever, representing the best of everything it meant to be American and Christian.

I'm not sure why it bothers me so much that he's passed on. He's in heaven, reunited with June & his Savior. I guess I feel like it's the end of something really incredible. He was to me, a man who lived and expressed his sin and redemption humbly, thoughtfully, and in a musically beautiful fashion.

Don't really know what else to say other than If you've yet to sit and listen to any of his albums, I hope now you will. Me, I'm gonna put on American IV, and work my way back.

If you want, you can view his last video for "Hurt" off American IV here.

Truly the end of an era. It's fitting that he would die so soon after his wife. And somehow, American IV seems like a perfect final album.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around his death. Damn, I loved his music. There's something true in it, in a way other country can never match. I would have liked to know him.

White text on a B&W background? What were you thinking, man?! I think I'm going to mourn/commiserate/celebrate/whatever the operative verb is, by finally getting around to going out and buying The Man Comes Around.

The tribute to Mr. Cash is nice, but man, it hurts my eyes!

I liked Johnny just as much as everyone else, but where's the love for the late-great John Ritter? It was his performance in Problem Child that taught me what it really meant to be an American.

Johnny Cash's passing from this life seems touches me as the end of an era. His music spanned my life time. He had his first hit in 1955 when I was seven years old. The first song I remember him singing was Folsom Prison Blues. Little did I know that in God's mysterious providence I would one day go (40 years later) into Folsom Prison to disciple prisoners. By the way, it's a myth that Johnny was ever in prison. He did do a few drunk tank appearances though! It was great to sit in my study with Josiah last Christmas sipping cognac and listening to Johnny's latest albums. Thanks for brining him and his music back into my life son. May God bless us all to "walk the line."

Somehow cognac just doesn't seem like the right drink to go with a Cash album. Then again, I was drinking pumpkin beer last night and that's probably not any more appropriate.
