Cranberries the Wet Sprocket
My recent fascination with Toad the Wet Sprocket, was also a bit of a trip down memory lane to me ol' highschool days (bizarrely, some 6 years ago now). It sorta inspired me to dig into some of my old favorites, namely, The Cranberries.
Now the 'berries really are a band you either love or hate. I'm amazed at the overwhelming number of folks who just find Dolores O'Riordan's voice utterly annoying. There's also the fact that many folks I felt were just waiting for the Cranberries to officially start sucking. I mean, you can't deny the catchiness and "goodness" of song's like "Dreams" and "Zombie." But you can wonder if it's just anomaly. Also consider that the Cranberries burst onto the scene during the whole grunge movement, so they never quite fit in...
So anyways, the 'berries then went off and confirmed all our worst suspicions and made two utterly horrible albums "Bury The Hatchet" and "Wake up and Smell the Coffee." I mean, I'm just amazed that a band could write so many beautiful songs, heck, songs that defined some very particular pretentious moments of my highschool career, and then turn out such utter schlack. It just feels like they lost their edge, or the duende as Nick Cave (thanks Mesh) would put it.
But still, you'd all be FOOLS, DAMN FOOLS if you didn't check out the Cranberries first two albums: "Everybody Else is Doing It So Why Can't We?" and "No Need to Argue." If you enjoy those, then move on to "To The Faithful Departed." In particular, you must pickup the song "Dreams." Sure, its one of the most used song title names in history, right behind "breath," but it's a perfect summer driving song, imo.

youre right. the first two albums are borderline classics/essentials (for 90's rock). i really like o'riordan's voice, especially since she is one of the few british aisles singers to allow her lilt into her singing. but i wouldnt say that "wake up" and "hatchet" were utterly horrible...they have some good tunes. each has a good first half, but towards the end the songs become vapid and monotonous (geez, im having trouble spelling...i hope i got that right). their middle album "to the faithful departed" is also in the middle of their first five as far as quality is concerned. its pretty good throughout, but just doesnt capture the beauty of their first two.

aahhh. The c'berries were the first non-classical music I fell in love with in highschool... Somethine so refreshing about the first album particularly...like Vivaldi. :-)

I love Everybody Else... and No need to argue was ok, and even to the faithful was eh. But i was looking at cds tonight at Best Buy I picked up Bury the Hatchet--never really seeing it before, and thought to myself the album cover alone tells me this band's glory days are over--its really a dumb looking cover. Call me crazy but i feel judging a cd by its cover is legit.

Before there was Natalie and Tori Amos, there was Natalie and Dolores O'Riordan... and when Bury the Hatchet came out I literally cried for the sheer suckiness of it...
