Delays & Macs
One thing I hate about waking up in the morning, is that there's this set group of obnoxious routine things I have to do between my bed and my office (my computer in the living room) that constitute "getting ready." Some things, like eating breakfast, I don't mind. Other things, like a shower and getting dressed, annoy the crap outta me. I feel they're just dead time, wasted time. I've attempted using that time to pray or something, but I'm just waking up, so I'm completely out of it.
Today I decided I'm going to simplify. All I'm doing is waking up, eating breakfast, having a smoke if I'm in the mood, and going straight to work. I'll take a shower during my lunch break, where nothing's good on TV and I have nothing better to do. I even think I'll wait to brush my teeth till then. I don't have to talk to anyone, and the Diet Coke does a good job of masking the "dragon breath," at least for a little while.
Rob had a funny thing posted on "Where Ute is Root" today. It's a fake commercial ripping on those Apple switch commercials. It had me rolling. Find the ad here.

I'm actually contemplating getting a powerbook myself. . .very nice machines.

I have a G3 powerbook, and I LOVE it. However, it's too old for OSX, so I recommend at least getting a G4.

I saw a commercial recently for the new G5, "the world's fastest personal computer," and I coveted it in my heart.
Posted by: John at July 22, 2003 02:09 PM
Yes. . .G5s are NICE.
The one I'm thinking of getting is a Powerbook G4 w/ a 867mhz CPU, Superdrive, 40gb hard drive, etc etc. . .for $450.
This is a new laptop with a one year warranty.
I like. . . :)

Steele, post a link to that Powerbook G4? And a screen size? Might make me want to upgrade my iMac for that price.
And Jeannette, I am running OS X 10.2.6 on a 400Mhz G3 iMac with 128MB of RAM. Unless you have one of the original Wall Street powerbooks it should run 10.
OSX rocks. The G5 rocks. I think I'll go get stoned.

Seriously, that sounds like an amazing deal on a laptop...

I've been searching for a cheap laptop to get before I take off for Scotland this fall and this one just kind of fell into my lap. The only reasons I haven't already bought it are that I need to get paid first and I'm still looking around for some references on the company. Apparently they were in offline retail only until very recently. I emailed their PR rep and he personally sent me a list of prices and other stuff, then followed with another email after I didn't respond right away. Usually I'm not real keen about ordering from small companies, but this one seems to be pretty good.
Anyways:

Ok. . .so the links didn't work.

You sure that deal wasn't what you paid for your plane tickets? That google link doesn't go anywhere, and I don't even see a company name in your post. A really good deal on one of those powerbooks, especially with the Superdrive, is usually easily over $1200. Unless you have some more convincing details, it sort of sounds like a scam. At PowerMax.com, a refurbished equivalent without the SuperDrive is nearly $1400.
Anyway, good luck with it and let people know if you figure out how to get it.

Yemen, what do you do at Covenant College? Are you a student? Why do you call yourself Yemen? There was once a Covenant student named Jeremy Cox we all called affectionately "Yemen." He had a sister named Jasmine...

Jonathan. Also try Macofalltrades.com. That's where I got mine. I have a G3 Wall Street-Pismo. It won't run OSX, I'm almost certain. Don't get the Wall Street-Lombard, they reportedly have wretched screen trouble.
Posted by: Jeannette at July 22, 2003 04:46 PM
Those Wallstreets do run OS X, even ancient Mac Clones run OS X (although you have to cheat). I ran a WallStreet w/ OS X for about a year, until my wife dropped it way too many times. I'm using an iBook 600Mhz now, and very happy...

Well...with all this affirmation...I'll have to try installing OSX, because I've been a little annoyed sometimes at only having OS9...can't download somethings, etc.

So yeah. . .I'm an idiot. I think my brain went dead those last few minutes at work or something.
Here's the link again.

Steele, that site is from Malaysia, so I would be really careful in sending any kind of information to them.
Posted by: Mike at July 23, 2003 07:41 AM
I know. . .I know.
That's the reason I haven't done anything.
Posted by: Steele at July 23, 2003 11:04 AM
Steele... Doesn't look like they accept credit cards. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole otherwise, since you have no protection. You can get a real one for about $1400. (dealmac.com)
Josiah, yes this is Jasmine's older brother. Steele always called me Yemen, so I figured that was an appropriate name to respond with.
Mandatory email fields are annoying.
Posted by: Yemen at July 23, 2003 11:34 AM
Yes I realize that as well. If I were to do this it would be with a PO money order.

You can pick up a nice G3 iBook 800Mhz for $899 in the refurb section of the Apple store. Mine has been a good little laptop, minus a couple of problems. Comes with a warranty to boot. I'd sell you mine, but I really can't right now.

One of my favorite things at L'Abri was the absence of morning delay. I set my alarm for 7:59AM so I could make it to a prepared breakfast by 8:00AM. Showers for me were, well, infrequent. After breakfast was a prayer time then I hit the books. Little time wasted on actions such as changing clothes and showering. That's the life.
Posted by: beck at July 23, 2003 04:19 PM
Man Beck, that's awesome. I wish there was a way to usefully use that delay time, like, maybe if I could answer e-mail while I was taking a shower or getting dressed.
What I need is like an AI equipped hoverball personal assistant thingie, that follows me and displays my e-mails and I can just talk the responses back or something. That'd be cool.

I don't even do breakfast on my way to work. Just roll out of bed and wander to the computer. First part of work is just catching up on what happened over night. Once I'm feeling a bit more awake, I'll wander to the kitchen to fix something to eat. On lucky days, my wife will make breakfast for me. I usually eat it in front of the computer. I shower & get dressed during my lunch break.
I have a 12" powerbook. I love it. Later this fall, I will be buying either a 17" powerbook or a G5 and will give the 12" to my wife.
Posted by: kevin at July 23, 2003 04:37 PM
If I eat breakfast, it's as I'm sitting down at my desk for work. Showers are strictly an after work activity... I'm paid hourly, and if I eat lunch at my desk while working, I don't have to clock out. So I do that and get off an hour earlier than if I took a lunch break. Not that I would do this or anything, but have you not had a day where you completely skipped showering since you work from home?
