Island Falls, Maine
I'm not sure I can express enough just how in the middle of nowhere April and I currently are.
We're staying at Vacationland Estates, up in Island Falls, ME. The town has about 600 residents, and was an old logging town founded back in 1857 by William Sewall, who first moved up here in the 1840's. I know all this because I'm sitting in their one room public library with a copy of their town history written back in 1965.
Nearly all the buildings in the "downtown" area (there are no stoplights, by the way) are pushing a hundred years old, and have that incredible old New England look and feel to them, which to me is downright incoherent in design. Odd balcony's and additions, since obviously funding was nearly non-existent to buldoze a building and then rebuild. Nearly the entire town, with the exception of a few people for the 2 restaurants, 2 general stores, and The Northern Pub
(only bar in town) are employed at this big ol' lumbar mill, the name of which currently escapes me.
Spring has yet to hit here. It's an odd switch. Going from Chattanooga, where summer is clearly in full swing, to Maine, were the green buds are just now starting to appear on the trees. It's amazing at night. April and I will sit on the deck of our little cabin/condo thingie, and you can't hear a damn thing. It's so quiet. The resort is primarily for snowmobile enthusiasts in the winter, and we are 1 of 4 people/groups currently at the "resort."
To give you some perspective on where we are, we are about 30 miles from the Canadian border, and about an 100 miles from Bangor, Maine, the nearest town of any size (above 2,000). The nearest "town," is Houlton, ME, on the border with Canada. If you want anything like to say, see the new Matrix movie, you have to drive there, to their two screen theater (currently showing Matrix: Reloaded and Daddy Day Care).
Anyways, we're having a great time up here. The people are great. They've got funny Fargo-Minnesota-Canada like accents. Tommorow April and I are cruising over to Nova Scotia to catch a ferry up to Prince Edward Isle. We might crash the night there, and then cruise back past The Bay of Funday (30 foot tides, I've wanted to see them since my 4th grade science class when we learned about spring tides and neap tides).
I'm out.

Today there was a NY Times article entitled "Dating a blogger, reading all about it." I suppose the same goes for honeymooning with a blogger.
Sounds like an amazing town. And that theater looks spectacular. If I could do anything as an old retired man, I would run a two screeen small theater in a New England town.
Jared Taylor and I are drinking So'Paw and watching the NBA. I suppose that seems sort of lame comparatively.
Much love to you two.
