Guerilla Fighting
I think the US may have misunderstood, or failed to anticipate the amount of anti-US resistance that would spring up when we invaded Iraq.
I believe an Iraq without Sadaam would be a better Iraq. I still hope that after Sadaam is finished/dead/captured the guerilla fighting will stop, and that paramilitary groups will cease to ambush and attack American troop and their fellow Iraqi civilians.
But I think that many of these paramilitary groups aren't in fact, pro-Sadaam; they're simply anti-American. I think the US may have failed to understand a particular cultural aspect of the Arab world: that there exists a region-wide dislike, even hatred of America.
I don't think its an issue of Islam being a peaceful religion or not, as many have argued. I think its a cultural issue: the middle east, by an large, has a great deal of antipathy towards the west. This is what's driving many of these feyedeen(sp?) and paramilitary soldiers to attack coalition forces.
I read a funny blurb on The Onion once, where they noted that perhaps a better name for the "Middle East Crisis" is the "Middle East Culture." While stated tounge-in-cheek, I think it may have been getting at a nugget of truth.
