an unprecedented war?
There has been a great deal of talk made over this war, it being something supposedly unprecedented.
The concern is I believe, the premptive nature of our attack on Iraq. Bush has tried very hard to show that although in some cases this attack is pre-emptive, it is in fact justified by Sadaam's support of terrorist groups, and that he would, if given the opportunity, use WMD's against the US and/or countries neighboring Iraq.
But even if the attack made by the US on Iraq is purely pre-emptive, is it really that unique? Jim Miller points out that there have been numerous, unilateral, pre-emptive attacks for the purpose of regime change, not just commited by the US, but by numerous other countries. If one thing is interesting, its that the US is one of the only distinctly western nations to consider it a worthwhile thing to remove an evil dictator with the potential of doing great damage.
But if there is one thing unique about all this hubub over UN support, is that there has only been one country in the history of its existence to ever ask for UN permission to go to war, and that's the United States. You can find a great article from the National Post on that issue here.
