"Old School" as "Fight Club Light"
I saw Old School tonight with a bud. Andy described it as "Fight Club Light." I think he was onto something.
The basic idea is a bunchof guys in their early to mid thirty's, suddenly, whether by their fault or no, find themselves disenchanted with their borring, repetitious lives, and decide to reclaim the fun, friendship, and brotherhood of their college days by starting their very own fraternity.
They suddenly find new gusto about their lives. They've got a tight, loyal group of friends, great times, and a salve for the bitterness of some of the bad cards life has dealt them. While I don't want to try to dive too deeply into themes that may not be there (it is after all a movie that has Will Farrell streaking down the main street of the town), I still think its fair to assume that some kindof desire for community is at the heart of the film.
It makes me really thankful for the group of friends and aquaintances I have here in Chattanooga. Its not like I've just got one or two solid friends with real love for one another; the Lord has blessed me with dozens of friends and aquaintances who care deeply about one another. And while not a perfect community by any stretch, its beautiful to be surrounded by so many people really struggling to figure out what it means to be Christ as a sinners among sinners.
