farming: July 2005 Archives

I had these beautiful crookneck squashes, and they were producing like squashes do. And then they started wilting, and looking ill around the stem.

So I did a little reading, and found what matched the description, and went to work.

THIS is what I found (do not click if you are the squeamish type).

And THIS!

And THIS!

There were probably dozens of the buggers in all.

So THIS is what I did. I warn you again, it is gruesome.

I slit open the stems and emptied them of borers as best I could. Then I buried the stems in hopes that they will reroot and recover.

On the bright side, we planted "asparagus beans" this year. Very productive -- no pests so far. Enough green beans for hundreds of stir fry's, probably.
