So tonight I ran into the library in a thunderstorm and borrowed Babette's Feast [Babettes gæstebud], a film (adapted from the the short story by Isak Dinesen) which has been on the recommended-to-me list for literally years and years. It was worth the wait.
"Throughout the world sounds one long cry from the heart of the artist: Give me the chance to do my very best."
"This is not the end.... In Paradise, you will be the great artist that God meant you to be. Ah, how you will delight the angels!"
You're fortunate to have a library that carries films like that; we're lucky here to keep all of our libraries open.
How DID you find a 16 year old review of that movie? :)
Posted by: J at August 4, 2004 10:29 AMI said that and now I note that our library has it. It pays to look before you speak.
Posted by: J at August 4, 2004 10:31 AMlove the quotes...I've been needing to see this film...maybe Kelly and I will check it out this weekend.
Posted by: Gypsy at August 4, 2004 10:35 AMi searched through a ton of "reviews" until i found one i felt was fair and didn't degrade the plot and message in a two-line blurb. :) this one's not perfect, but it's better than the others.
posting a pic now.
wow. that's beautiful
Posted by: gwen at August 4, 2004 10:55 AMBen and I are going to see it tonight (second time for me). I'm so glad you've watched it!
Posted by: steph at August 9, 2004 01:54 PMand how come this is the first time I've ever heard of this movie Miss McCarnan? All these years...tsch. tsch. I thought we were friends. Now that the only copy has probably been checked out and put on reserve by all the other people above, I guess I'll have to move.
Posted by: gouge at August 10, 2004 09:15 AMdid you say move?
ok. there're two copies here in the rkfd library.
and zero competition.
Sorry to be late. Don't know when anyone will read this. Years ago I was switching channels and came upon this movie almost to the end but became facinated with it. When Babette said "a great artist is never poor", wow, that line struck me. I now use "an artist is never poor" as my signature. It rings so true.
Posted by: Lesley at June 7, 2006 02:33 PMOne of the better films ever made about life in Christ. There's a lovely transition from OT to NT, and from desire to deferral.
I showed this as part of a foreign film showing/discussion series I moderated a couple years ago. It was one of the only films that everyone liked.
Hope you don't mind my commenting on such an old post. Just consider it a turn like your finding such an old review.
