Our church sign is bigger than yours...

After a few weeks of Kerry and I making fun of Red Bank Cumberland Presbyterian's giant new LED wannabe bank sign, I was saddened when the church of my denomination, or nondenomination, or whatever, Red Bank church of Christ, now has almost the exact same sign. But in either case, what are they thinking? How much are those things? What's the justification?

I would like to see their visitor cards in the pews with a How did you hear about us: friend, relative, enormous blinking sign? How many drivers or pedestrians really come to Christ because some quip like, "No God - No Peace? Know God - Know Peace." What does that even mean?

I guess what I really don't like the most is the disconnect between our mission and how we put out our message. It's getting more and more impersonal. Not that I don't mind knowing the time or temp before I get to the bank, but really, has nobody seen the starving kids in Africa? "Feed my sheep."

Not even if it were the life-altering highway sign from LA Story, would I support my congregation wasting money in this way.

How 'bout an enormous lighted cowboy waving his hat toward heaven?

Well, I suppose if all the people who are against a sign that 1) captures the attention of people driving by, and gives them instant information regarding the activities of a church that might make them consider attending to find out more, 2) makes them notice the church in the first place, who notices churches if they drive by everyday? and 3) ministers to people in a somewhat wacky manner?
-- that's fine, they are entitled to their opinion. But, seriously folks, how many of you 1)attend church, 2) donate your 10%, 3)love your neighbors, 4) tell them about Christ, 5) help the poor in YOUR neighborhood, 6) love your church family, etc, etc? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

NOW, in defense of the sign - it cost no more than an average, small SUV, how many of you are driving one of them? I attend the Red Bank CP Church, and we debated this sign for over a year before deciding on this one. A "normal" unlit sign would have saved about $10,000, at most, and we could have spent all that on a larger unlit sign. Then someone would have had to change the message manually to keep it current, and no one wants to do that.

Yes, it may sometimes go over the top in tackiness, but what is tacky to one person is perfect to someone else, are you part of the censoring committee?

Anyway, in the big scheme of things, what did Jesus command his disciples to do? Give ALL they had away and follow him, their rewards were going to be in heaven. Are yours?

Church spending is why I left the church. When I think of how vain and how much money some congregations spend to have a temple to their God, I sort of feel queasy. That money is better spent on the helping the poor help themselves.

We left the church (non-Chatt church) about the same time they decided to raise money for a church van, then a car cover for the van that was acutally a small bus, and then for a $250K indoor ballcourt/kitchen/gathering hall. They started asking for money and I thought, nope, not from us you won't get money. We were in a tight period budget wise and all the money being spent didn't sit right with us. We kept quietly talking about folks who were worse off than us who could have used the help rather than the construction company and architect that built this building...

That's what I'm screaming. Jean and I constantly make fun of the blinking sign at Red Bank Pres. I just think that they're materialistic and tacky. Spend money on mission work or for people here who need help, not on a sign that looks like it belongs on the front of the convention center.

Well if you don't want preachers using imaginative puns to bring people to Jesus, then how DO you suggest they do it? I mean, they've gotta do something the other six days of the week.
