Here's your homework for tonight. Read this link, (via the Presurfer) then report back to me. He meant it as a joke, and I did laugh over some of it but it also got me thinking. Some of you have kids, will have kids, want to have kids, or in some cases, just ACT like kids. Regardless, we all make decisions about what t.v. programming we allow in our home. This article is about some of the cartoons kids watch and some possible or imagined occultic meaning behind them. I think some of it is pretty silly, like My Little Pony, but I want your opinions.
Posted by Shannon at July 21, 2003 09:56 PM | TrackBackI must say- I think this guy is over the top. My main problem with his presentation is that he doesn't support any of his arguments. He says- this is what the character does: "this is clearly occult". But, he doesn't tell you why it is occult. Telling me how "He-man" got his power is not the same as proving that it is occultish. Same thing with 101 Dalmations- I don't remember Cuella Deville casting any spells over anyone- she stole the puppies. Yes, she was a Cruel Devil-doesn't mean she's the Anti-Christ. I do think he's right about Captain Planet-that one is pretty obviously a liberal regime. But, I'm just not convinced on most of it. Maybe there is some truth in what he is saying- but I think his presentation was weak. I'm glad you posted it- I do think that the cartoons these days are mostly garbage. Maybe I'm just defensive because a lot of the cartoons he mentioned are from my own childhood. I loved "My little Pony" and "He-man" and "101 Dalmations". Anyway- this is simply my initial reaction to it.
Posted by: Lisa Huntington at July 22, 2003 11:16 AMYeah, mine too. Obviously the Smurfs had a little something going on, but c'mn... the good guys ALWAYS won.
Posted by: Shannon at July 22, 2003 11:25 AMI seem to remember hearing that the smurfs were originally created as to be as a much 'darker' cartoon and that they first were black with orange caps to evoke a halloween type image. Can anyone verify this or is it all made up?
Posted by: Patrick at July 22, 2003 01:45 PMHere's my theory:
Even if some of this stuff he mentioned is "occultish", I don't have a problem with it as long as it's the bad guys who are doing it. He seems simply to have a problem with evil in every story -- and in a culture in which every good story will reflect Christ's story, you can't have a story without evil and the eventual defeat of it.
It seems to me that this guy would be one of those people who gets his undies in a bunch over Narnia and Tolkien and all other forms of fantasy. And also possibly someone who's opposed to Looney Tunes because they're so violent.
I'd rather not let my kids watch many modern cartoons because they're mostly stupid and gross, not because I'm afraid the devil will get them.
Posted by: Micah at July 23, 2003 10:47 AMThat explains so much. All those killers, rapists and other criminals who claim that My Little Pony or Papa Smurf made them do it. And who of us can ignore the real evil behind global terrorism - the cult of the hobbits.
Give me a BREAK - we are mostly rational thinking human beings able to differentiate between fact and fantasy.
